Niyama: Ishvara Pranidhana

Ishvara Pranidhana is a great way to overcome anxiety and feeling overwhelmed in your life. This Niyama is not about what yoga can do for your life but more about approaching your practice in a state of mind that brings an offering. The meaning of ‘Ishvara Pranidhana’ is a combination of two words. Ishvara which means ‘Lord’, ‘Supreme Being’, ‘God’, ‘Ultimate Reality’ or ‘True Self’ and Pranidhana which means "owner of best, beautiful", ‘ruler of choices’, ‘blessings, boons’. In most yogic translations of this Niyama, we are taught to surrender to our higher self. Ultimately, we must find a way to create a deep, meaningful relationship with the universe and make every moment of our life one about offering our best self to something bigger than us.

Ishvarapranidhana shifts our perspective from our ego and living in ‘I’ to living in a state of true self being grounded away from the endless agitation and anxiety of the mind. To practice the Niyama Ishvara Pranidhana, we must develop our very own intimate connection to the universe. In yoga, this is known as your Ishta-Devata. The yogi concept of Ishta-Devata teaches us that we each have our own personal relationship with the Divine and that this will serve as a powerful means of yogic unification for our mind, body, and soul. The one principle of Ishvara Pranidhana: surrender and rest. You will learn how to surrender to posture in yoga, while learning to trust the universe. You can apply this to your life by simply surrendering to the moment.
