Our sense of smell is strong, and scents can recall emotions and memories in an instant. These memories, emotions and feelings can have an immediate impact directly on our bodies because they relay through our nervous system.

 

Some scents can be overwhelming or negative, while others can calm and soothe us – activating the parasympathetic nervous system (also called the ‘Rest and Digest System’). When we are in a state of comfort and rest, our nervous system slows the heart rate and sends a signal to the digestive system that “everything is okay.”

 

Our lives tend to be more stress-inducing than we realize, because our bodies get used to elevated levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) in our system. To find a sense of calm without having to crawl in bed and pull the covers over our head, we can use essential oils and aromatherapy.
